Are These 3 Ingredients Lurking in Your Shampoo & Conditioner?

This article by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics does a fabulous job explaining a process called “ethoxylation” that leads to 1,4 dioxane contamination. 

You can see that 1,4 Dioxane is an unintentional by-product of many sulfate-based formulations and is sadly also a known carcinogen. 

The problem is that sulfates are everywhere! And in nearly EVERY shampoo!

Quats release formeldehyde (yup, embalming fluid – yuck!) and, again, it doesn’t even have to go on the label!

And just in case you’re not convinced, there are ethanolamines… 

Ethanolamines (DEA, TEA, MEA on the label) are mainly used as emulsifiers (they help bind water and oil together) and react easily with other preservatives in the bottle to form nitrosamines. 

According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, nitrosamines are classified as known carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. 

Now I could keep picking this ingredient panel apart…
